A SPECIAL ỌBAFẸMI AWOLỌWỌ FOUNDATION DIALOGUE
IN CELEBRATION OF THE ỌBAFẸMI AWOLỌWỌ CENTENNIAL JULY 21 – 22, 2009
The Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Foundation is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit research and policy analysis centre founded in April 1992 and dedicated to the promotion of a socially edifying interaction between policy and scholarship. Its credo is, ‘generating ideas for national development’.
In line with this credo, a Special Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Foundation Dialogue in Celebration of the Awolọwọ Centennial is being jointly organised by the Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Foundation and Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ University, Ile-Ife, with the theme, ‘The Awolọwọ Legacy and the Youth’. The Awolọwọ legacy in this context is, essentially, the concept of the development of the individual as the remedy for Nigeria’s underdevelopment. The aim of the Dialogue is, therefore, to inspire the youth to prepare to fashion an ennobling future for their generation by drawing on outstanding lessons from the past.
The 2-day meeting is scheduled to hold from July 21 – 22, 2009 at Oduduwa Hall, Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ University, Ile-Ife.
Following two agenda-setting keynote addresses, presentations are structured to examine the philosophical underpinning of the Awo legacy, strengths, challenges and achievements from the past, examples of present efforts to move the development agenda forward and, finally, a prescription of feasible strategies to move the vision into the future, in the light of current and predicted national and global challenges/opportunities.
Speakers are mainly scholars and technocrats. However, a ‘Governors’ Roundtable’, made up of 2 or 3 selected governors is being proposed under the sub-theme, ‘Sustaining the Legacy’ and a ‘Youth Forum’ tagged ‘Towards a Brighter Tomorrow’ is planned. Moreover, an award ceremony to honour some of those who have contributed immeasurably to the founding and development of Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ University – an institution which is a quintessential legacy of Chief Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ – is part of the programme.
