ỌBAFẸMI AWOLỌWỌ FoundationPECIAL DIALOGUE

THEME: ‘TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND GOOD GOVERNANCE: LESSONS FROM THE AWOLỌWỌ EXAMPLE’

DATE: JULY 20-21, 2011

VENUE: ẸFUNYẸLA HALL, CHIEF AWOLỌWỌ’S RESIDENCE, IKẸNNẸ

SYNOPSIS

Chief Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ exhibited the finest traits of a leader. He was honest, visionary, competent, inspiring and intelligent.

More than that, he had a leadership approach that changed individuals and society. He engendered trust, admiration, loyalty and respect in his followers and because of his qualities they were willing to work harder than would be expected. He provided his followers with an inspiring mission and vision. He was a transformational leader.

His accomplishments in the entire country but particularly in the South-West of Nigeria and, therefore, his enduring influence 24 years after his transition eloquently attest to this fact.

Further, the government he led in the Western Region from 1952-1960 was participatory, consensus oriented, accountable, transparent, responsive, effective and efficient, equitable and inclusive and followed the rule of law – exhibiting, thereby, the best characteristics of good governance.

As recently-elected Federal and State governments prepare to settle down to business, the Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Foundation chooses to, once again, actualise its mission-mandate by organising a scholarly review of Awo’s leadership and governance models, and distil lessons therefrom, through a Special Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Foundation Dialogue, as our contribution to the process of nation-building.

Papers will be presented on various aspects of the theme and, as is the tradition of previous outings of the Foundation, the Dialogue will be concluded with recommendations on ‘the way forward’.

The Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Foundation Dialogue series, which commenced in 1992, provides a unique opportunity for incisive analysis and thorough examination of contemporary issues of national concern with a view to canvassing viable options and strategies to address those issues.
